How to make more out of a bathroom

Bathroom Faux finishes

It was my peasure to help my client to complete the bathroom in her charming Pasadena home.

For the walls and ceiling we were chosing a faux finish of French Country style – a style which was dominating the whole home.  It could be seen in the custom tiles, the cabinets and sinks.
I faux finished the doors and window frames in using first a dark brown as base coat, then a glaze mixed out of the actual wall color with some brown.  At the end I distressed the wood and used some brown for the edges and lines.

Italy Tuscany Mural

Tuscany Mural

This beautiful mural was done for a showroom in a furniture store in the basement . There were no windows and the Tuscan Mural brought some light and life to the space.

Basically every room which is dark, has only small windows or is too small can be lightened up with a mural.

The faux finished arch and the balcony create extra space which make you feel steping out.

You don’t need to be an Italy fan for such a mural.  It can be done in less than 2 weeks and will cost you $2700. What a deal for a daily view!

Jungle Door Mural

Tropical Rainforest
Tropical Rainforest

I did this mural on a door which was the entracne to a store. The store sold reptile food and all kind of exotic animals.

As you can see the entrance is completely covered by the mural. Even the door handle is included; a scorpion sits on it.

Quite  a while after the mural was finished, there was a robbery nearby and several stores got broken into. Not the one whith the mural though. The robbers could not see the entrance!

That’s how a mural can get also some functional purpose. If you like a mural for your commercial space call 818 470 2932 for an estimate.

Golden Wall Finish

Boring bathroom? No contrast? All walls are white?

A golden wall finish adds warmth to any room. You can choose from mor than 15 different metallic colors.

I did this wall finish for a private residence in Stevenson Ranch. The bathroom was all white.

The golden color adds a warm shine to the room and is matching the golden wall with vines in the bedroom which came first.

Asian Mural for Diningroom or bathroom

Do you like the Asian style of interior design?  I did this Bamboo Mural for a Diningroom and it made such a big difference. My client had many Asian accents in her home and the Bamboo wall made the diningroom look perfect. Such a mural can be in a hallway or livingroom as well as in a bathroom. In fact it looks like hand painted wall paper and such a look adds some sophisticated touch to the space.

How to make a room look bigger

Tropical Mural

  • Choose a templateFor the bathroom I got a picture (in this case from the Interior Designer) and I used it as a template;  it was a tropical scene which the client liked a lot.

    Step 2
    Make the draft (design)

You can do a little drawing or use your painting computer programs such as Photoshop. I always take a picture of the blank wall and copy and paste the mural elements into the photograph. For the tropical mural I took some elements of the photo and combined them with other ideas like hibiscus flowers, tropical plants and so on.
I will show you a detailled draft in my next article.

Step 3
Paint the mural
If the mural needs a light coating you would do this first. For the tropical landscape I used a white surface because of the different colors (sky and forest)
Then you do the outlines; I use charcoal – I would not recommend pencil or any other paint.
Fill in hte background colors for the sky and forest, so a foliage green and sky blue which I . Use light colors and systematically add the details. You can do them freehand or project them. For this mural I used the projector only for the plant named bird of paradise in the right corner.

Step 4
The mural’s details would be added at the end, some highlights, deeper tones and little lines here and there. It has to come alive.
After it was finished I sealed the mural with a matt finish to protect it from moisture.

What do you do when the bathroom is long and small as the one I did the mural for?
First a Faux Finish will add a warm touch to the whole room.  Then I painted a Niche Mural which was adding dimension and more brightness into the small bathroom. The stencil border makes the whole design complete.
